What Knitters Can Expect 

Two specially designed knitting projects

​Yarn and patterns for two projects will be provided, along with any specialized notions required. The

​projects will give us opportunities to explore techniques, ideas and design - not simply follow a

​pattern.

A swag bag

​A collection of useful, beautiful and perhaps slightly unexpected things for our knitting adventure.

Classes - and help beyond the classroom

​Once the formal class schedule is established, I will also set aside time before or after classes to help

​with personal knitting projects. Bring no more than two projects you would particularly like help with.

Evening knitting

​I knit most evenings, and everyone is welcome to join me. Perhaps we will make it our unofficial

​mission to try every comfortable sitting area on the ship.

A tea party

​We will have a special social gathering during the cruise. Tea and goodies are the plan. The date,

​time and final form are still to be determined.

A Week Seen Through a Maker's Eyes

Alaska through a designer's eyes

​The Inside Passage is considered one of the world's great scenic journeys. We will look at the Pacific

​Northwest and Alaska not simply as travellers, but as knitters and designers.

​What colours do we see? What happens where mountains meet water? What can glaciers, forests,

​wildflowers, architecture, changing light and dramatic contrasts suggest in yarn, stitch and shape?

​You do not need to think of yourself as a designer. Curiosity is enough.

Bring out the beautiful knitting

​Bring some of the knits you love but rarely have an occasion to wear. Dinner aboard ship seems an

​excellent excuse. We will share our work, hear the stories behind it and enjoy seeing beautiful knitting

​actually being worn.

Our final afternoon

​We will gather to share our stash-enhancement treasures, discoveries and the design ideas that have

​emerged during the week. And we will consider one final question: What did Alaska send you home

​wanting to make?

What Knitters Should Bring

Bring curiosity, open eyes and an open mind - and some comfortable walking shoes. I plan to walk

most mornings before breakfast, and anyone who wants to join me is welcome.

Needles

​Bring 2.0 mm (US 0) 7-8 inch DPNs or a 16 inch circular, plus 3.25, 3.5, 3.75, 4.0 and 4.5 mm 16 inch

​circulars and DPNs. The range is intentional: we will swatch to find the appropriate gauge rather than

​assuming one needle size works for everyone.

Notions & travel-safe cutting tools

​Bring markers and a blunt tapestry needle. For cutting yarn, please bring a cruise-friendly tool such as

​small safety scissors with blunt tips and blades shorter than 4 inches, bean snips, a thread cutter, or

​another compact travelling yarn-cutting tool. Please avoid large or sharply pointed scissors.

Conversation knitting

​Bring one piece of uncomplicated, mindless knitting. There will undoubtedly be times when the

​conversation is considerably more interesting than counting stitches.

Something splendid

​Bring one particularly splendid piece of knitting to wear to tea.
